Xavier Simons joined Chelsea in 2016 from Brentford after the Bees made the decision to close their academy programme.

A vocal and tough-tackling midfielder, he captained our youngsters to Premier League Cup glory in his Under-16 season and made two appearances for the youth team before signing his scholarship deal in the summer of 2019. His first goal at youth team level came in our 5-3 win over Tottenham and he notched his second of the campaign shortly afterwards in a 7-0 thumping of Wolves in the FA Youth Cup.

In January of that season, a development squad debut awaited after consistently strong midfield performances from Simons. This was after he had featured for our Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League for the first time, his maiden outing in that competition coming against Lille in October. In total, he made 23 Academy outings and scored two goals in his first season as a full-time footballer.

An England Under-17 international, Simons was hit by injury during the 2020/21 season, playing the first two games of the youth team campaign before being ruled out for the remainder of the term. However, he bounced back superbly and returned in pre-season during summer 2021, soon earning the captain's armband for Andy Myers's teams in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League.

Prior to the 2021 Christmas break, Simons made 16 appearances for the development squad, including three in the EFL Trophy, operating in a variety of roles including right-back, right wing-back and central midfield. He has one goal and three assists to his name to date, the highlight being a brilliant long-range strike against Malmo at Kingsmeadow in the Youth League group stage.

On the international stage, the teenager scored on his debut for England Under-17s in a 5-0 win over Finland.
