Xavier Simons joined us in 2016 from Brentford after the Bees made the decision to close their academy programme.

Academy years

A vocal and tough-tackling midfielder, he captained our Under-16s to Premier League Cup glory last season and made two appearances for the youth team. A regular in Ed Brand's Under-18s this term, Simons is also an England Under-17 international - he marked his debut with a goal in a 5-0 win over Finland. 

He signed his scholarship deal in July 2019 and turned professional in February 2020. His first goal at youth team level came in Chelsea's 3-5 win over Tottenham and he notched his second that season in the 7-0 thumping ofWolves in the FA Youth Cup. In January 2020 a development squad debut awaited after consistently strong midfield performances from Simons, this was after he featured for our Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League for the first time, his maiden outing in that competition came against Lille in October 2019. In total he made 23 Academy outings and scored two goals in his first season as a full-time footballer.

Injury limited Simons' playing time during the 2020/21 season, he played in the first two games of the Under-18 Premier League season but was ruled out for the season after that. He made progress towards the end of the term and began light training in preparation for his new season with the development squad.
