A central midfielder who joined the club from Charlton Athletic as an Under-11, Charlie Colkett made his youth team debut while still an Under-15 during the 2011/12 campaign. As a schoolboy the following season, he worked full-time with the Under-18s and featured in runs to the final in both the Youth Cup and NextGen Series.

In his debut campaign as a scholar, Colkett struggled with a persistent muscle injury and didn’t play a run of games until after Christmas. However, he thrived on being handed the captain’s armband by Adi Viveash and was instrumental as the team went all the way to win the Youth Cup. Charlie was involved in every game and scored in the fourth round, both semi-final legs against Arsenal and netted a penalty in the final. His audacious back-heel in the box in stoppage time created the chance for Dominic Solanke to bury the winner.

An Under-21 regular in 2014/15, the midfielder captained the Youth Cup team to another trophy success. He played in every round once again and was influential in the semi-final comeback against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice. In the UEFA Youth League, he played in every game as the young Blues were crowned European champions, scoring in the second round against Zenit St Petersburg and the semi-final against Roma.

Injuries affected his involvement in 2015/16, though he was on the bench for the first team in a Premier League game at Swansea in April 2016, his first involvement at that level in a competitive game. He then opened his goal account for the season the following weekend and at an important time, in a UEFA Youth League semi-final win over Anderlecht, before captaining the team to glory in the final.

He completed a very good month by signing a new three-year contract. A junior international, Colkett made his debut for England Under-20s in November 2015 and scored.

In August 2016 he made his first move on loan, to Bristol Rovers in League One, along with fellow Chelsea Academy player Jake Clarke-Salter.

Colkett made 17 appearances for the Pirates and scored three goals before moving on loan to another League One side, Swindon Town, in January 2017. It was a difficult campaign for Swindon, who were eventually relegated, but Colkett performed well in a struggling team and started matches regularly. He made 19 appearances and scored his only goal in a home defeat to Sheffield United.

It was announced in July 2017 that Colkett would be spending the next season on loan at Vitesse in the Netherlands. The midfielder made 11 appearances, including three in the Europa League, during an injury-affected spell with the Dutch club. He returned to Chelsea in January 2018.

In July 2018 it was announced he would be spending the next season on loan at League One Shrewsbury Town.
