Eduardo signed from Dinamo Zagreb in August 2016 to provide experienced goalkeeper cover and competition for Thibaut Courtois and Asmir Begovic.

That summer he had been part of Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 squad and joined the Blues on a one-year contract following two seasons with the Croatian champions.

He was an unused substitute in six games in 2016/17 and at the end of the season signed a new one-year contract.

In 2017/18 he continued to provide important support to Thibaut Courtois and newly signed Willy Caballero, and was an unused sub on a further 13 appearances. In July 2018 it was announced he would be spending the following season on loan at Vitesse. He had also signed a new contract with Chelsea, with the option of extending his deal with us until the summer of 2020.

Eduardo, full name Eduardo dos Reis Carvalho, played his youth football at Braga where he made his name as a first-team regular and was a team-mate of the young Diego Costa. He progressed into the national team, making his Portugal debut in February 2009.

The 6ft 2in keeper was first choice for his country at the World Cup in 2010, conceding just one goal in four matches. That summer he signed for Serie A side Genoa, where for a season he worked with Chelsea goalkeeping coach Gianluca Spinelli.
