Ethan Ampadu is a centre-back or deep midfielder who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2017 from Exeter City, where he became the Devon club's youngest-ever player the previous season.

Early impact

Ampadu began the 2017/18 season playing for Chelsea Academy sides, featuring predominantly for our development squad. After impressing Antonio Conte with his calm play and leadership qualities, he made his senior debut as a second-half substitute in a Carabao Cup win at home to Nottingham Forest in September 2017, before his first start in the next round the following month against Everton.

At 17 years and six days, he became the club's eighth youngest debutant and the first player born after the start of the year 2000 to begin a Chelsea game.

Ampadu’s first Premier League action came late on in a win at Huddersfield and, as well as taking part in the Academy’s biggest fixtures, he continued to feature for the senior team in the domestic cups.

Ampadu committed his long-term future to the club by signing a five-year contract in September 2018, and he made his first start of the 2018/19 campaign when he partnered Andreas Christensen at the heart of the back four in a Europa League game against MOL Vidi.

Having previously shown his versatility by playing in both central defence and as a deep-lying midfielder for the Blues, Ampadu was deployed in an advanced midfield position for our FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, operating on the right of the trio and performing well. However, a recurring back problem kept him sidelined from February onwards.

International career

Having represented Wales up to Under-19 level prior to joining Chelsea, he made his senior international debut when he came on in the second half of a friendly international against France in November 2017.

Loan experience

In his first move away from Chelsea, Ampadu joined RB Leipzig for the 2019/20 season. The youngster made a total of seven outings for the German side, boasting a good record winning five and drawing two of those matches. The Welshman also gained his first taste of Champions League football featuring three times in the competition, including in his team's 0-1 win over Spurs at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Ampadu made a loan switch to a Premier League club, joining Sheffield United. In South Yorkshire he gained plenty of experience with 29 games played, 25 of them in the top-flight, albeit in a season that ended in relegation.

He signed a new three-year Chelsea contract on 31 August 2021 before heading to Serie A side Venezia on loan.
