Ian Maatsen is a player first scouted by our recruitment team playing in the Netherlands for the Under-16 national team and his former club, PSV Eindhoven. He joined us in July 2018.
The young Dutchman is an adaptable player who can play at left-back, wing-back, centre-back or in central midfield, and that versatility was utilised in his maiden season in England as he featured in a number of defensive positions for our academy teams. His first Chelsea goal came in a 3-1 youth team win against Arsenal in September 2018 before his development squad debut later that month in the Checkatrade Trophy away at Newport County. A Netherlands Under-18 international, he featured throughout our run to the UEFA Youth League finals weekend.
At the Under-17 World Cup in 2019, Maatsen and the Netherlands were defeated in the semi-final against Mexico and finished in fourth place. The 2019/20 season saw Maatsen cement a place in the development squad defence, captaining the side on several occasions. Still eligible for the Under-18s, Maatsen scored his first Youth Cup goal in the 7-0 thrashing over Wolves in February 2020. In total, Maatsen appeared 23 times across the Academy teams during 2019/20 and scored a solitary goal.
Maatsen signed his first professional contract at the club in March 2019 and made his senior debut in September of that same year. Aged 17, the Dutch youth international played 24 minutes of Chelsea's 7-1 Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town. A new contract running until at least the summer of 2024 was announced for the defender on his 18th birthday in 2020.
In October 2020, Maatsen moved on loan to League One Charlton Athletic, his first loan. While with The Addicks, Maatsen quickly became popular among supporters and made 35 outings in all competitions. He scored his first professional goal against Doncaster while playing as a right winger, a position he found himself in frequently while away.
In July 2021, it was announced his next loan would be in the Championship, at Coventry City.
