Jon Russell has been with us since the Under-7 age group after advancing through our development centre programme.

Academy years

He is a very tall box-to-box midfield player who can also play as a number 10 and has a great eye for a pass. After making his youth team debut as a substitute on the opening day of the 2017/18 campaign, Jon went on to make nine appearances for the Under-18s in his maiden season as a scholar. His only goal came two minutes into a big 7-0 win over West Ham in November.

In October 2017, he signed a first professional contract at the club. In the 2019/20 season after a lengthy injury Russell scored the goal to send Chelsea through to the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy with a last-minute winner at Plymouth Arglye's Home Park, less than a week later he was on the scoresheet again when the Blues defeated Blackburn in PL2, his first goal of the season. After three goals in 11 development squad appearances, Russell signed a new one-year contract with the Blues, running until June 2021.

At the start of October 2020, it was announced Russell was joining League One side Accrington Stanley on loan, with another Chelsea player Tariq Uwakwe also there.
