Juan Castillo is a wide player signed from Ajax in the summer of 2016.
In his younger schoolboy days, he played in central midfield and as a winger, while also featuring at wing-back in his debut campaign as a Chelsea scholar. A former captain of Ajax and the Netherlands, he has represented his country up to Under-19 level.
Through hard work and application, he forced his way into our 2016/17 Youth Cup side as the campaign progressed, starting both legs of the semi-final and final, and scoring the ninth goal in our 9-2 aggregate thrashing of Tottenham. He ended the season with winners medals in the Youth Cup and Under-18 Premier League.
Castillo scored his first development squad goal in our Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final win over Oxford United.
In 2017/18, the Dutchman split his duties between the youth team and development squad, while also featuring in all but one game as our Under-19s were runners-up in the UEFA Youth League. He scored his first development squad goal in our Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final win over Oxford United and was a regular throughout our triumphant Youth Cup campaign.
The following season, he worked full-time with the older age groups and scored a crucial Youth League goal against Montpellier in the last-16 as we finished runners-up on the continental stage once again.
In August 2019, Castillo signed a new contract and it was announced he would be returning to Ajax, this time on loan for the season ahead. He featured predominantly for Ajax's Under-21 team starting in 23 of their 29 fixtures - from left-back he made six assists helping the team to a fourth place finish in the Dutch second division.
In October 2020 he returned to the Netherlands for another loan, this time to AZ Alkmaar but when that spell was cut short he moved to ADO Haag. While at Den Haag he made 17 outings as the team were relegated from the top flight of Dutch football.
At the start of the 2021/22 season, Castillo embarked on his first loan in England, at Championship side Birmingham City having signed a one-year contract extension at Chelsea. He played three league games and two Carabao Cup games for Birmingham before in January 2022 switching to League One Charlton Athletic for a further loan.
