Luke McCormick is a midfielder who has trained with the club since the age of six and signed as an Under-9.
After coming through our development centre programme and joining at the earliest age of registration, McCormick progressed through the Academy ranks in the same team as Mason Mount and Trevoh Chalobah. He was predominantly a striker in the younger age groups but has featured in a variety of positions more recently, including out wide, in central midfield and at right-back. In 2015/16, he was a youth team regular, predominantly in a central midfield role. He scored his only goal of the season from the penalty spot in a 6-2 win over Reading in April 2016 and also made his Under-21 debut before the end of the campaign.
The following season, he made 30 youth team appearances, including three in the Youth Cup, as our Under-18s won a Treble of trophies. His goalscoring form peaked with five goals in three games in the spring, including a hat-trick in our 13-0 victory over Brighton.
McCormick made his UEFA Youth League debut in a memorable victory over Qarabag, captaining the side and netting a hat-trick in a 5-0 win.
The midfielder stepped up to work with the development squad full-time in the summer of 2017 and quickly established himself as a key part of Joe Edwards's engine room. Domestically, he made over 20 appearances in Premier League 2 and the senior Checkatrade Trophy, scoring our equaliser at Yeovil Town in October. However, it was on the European stage that he made the biggest impact, contributing to eight goals and assists combined in the UEFA Youth League as our Under-19s reached the final.
2018/19 was a mixed campaign for McCormick, with a recurring back injury keeping him sidelined for much of the season, though his return after Christmas was timely. He proved an influential member of the team as we finished runners-up again in the Youth League, captaining the side throughout the latter stages and scoring important goals in the last-16, quarter-final and semi-final.
In the summer of 2019, McCormick signed a new three-year contract and joined League One Shrewsbury Town on loan for the 2019/20 season. He returned to the Blues in January having made eight appearances across all competitions for the Shrews and played a part in our development squad securing the Premier League 2 title.
Having appeared as a substitute in the men’s first team pre-season game at Brighton in August 2020, he moved on loan to Bristol Rovers, again in League One.
