DATE OF BIRTH9 February 1995
Mario Pasalic signed from Hajduk Split on 9 July 2014.
Upon completing his transfer, the 19-year-old said: ‘I am a central midfielder, my favourite player is Frank Lampard, and so I am very happy to be a Chelsea player.’
The German-born youngster enjoyed a fine first full season in senior football during 2013/14, scoring 11 times in 36 appearances in all competitions and helping his side to third place in the Croatian league. He made his first team debut late in the previous season.
He joined Jose Mourinho’s squad for pre-season training at Cobham and on 22 July, it was announced he would spend the 2014/15 season on loan in the Spanish top flight with Elche. Plenty of on-pitch time resulted, with Pasalic making 29 starts and six substitute appearances. The team finished comfortably mid-table in their second season in the top division after 24 years away.
It was announced on 3 July 2015 that Pasalic would spend the coming season on loan at Ligue 1 club Monaco. The news came on the same day Chelsea agreed terms with Monaco for the season-long loan that brought Radamel Falcao to Stamford Bridge.
He scored seven goals in 29 appearances there, including two in Champions League qualifying fixtures early in the campaign and the only goals in home league wins against Angers and Nantes. He also featured in their Europa League campaign, playing against Tottenham and with a third-place finish in Ligue 1, he helped Monaco back into the Champions League qualifiers.
In August 2016 it was announced he would spend the 2016/17 campaign on loan at AC Milan. He established himself in the Serie A side's midfield, playing 27 matches, 21 of them from the start and scoring six goals, including a winner away at Bologna. He also netted the winning penalty in a shoot-out that decided the Italian Super Cup. That match was against Juventus just before Christmas 2016 and was played in Qatar.
Having represented Croatia at Under-21 level and named in his country’s 30-man provisional World Cup squad for Brazil 2014 but not making the cut, he was given his senior international debut in September 2014, coming on for Mario Mandzukic in the second half a friendly win at home to Cyprus.
Pasalic featured in the opening game of our tour of Asia in 2017 having travelled with Antonio Conte's squad.
He joined Spartak Moscow on loan for the 2017/18 season and played 28 times for the Russian side, including in the Champions League and Europa League. He scored four goals, including at home against Zenit St Petersburg and in both fixtures versus local rivals CSKA Moscow.
In July 2018, a few days after he had appeared in a Chelsea pre-season friendly in Perth, Australia, he moved on loan for the season to Serie A side Atalanta.
It proved to be a profitable season for player and loan club. He played 42 games and scored eight goals there as Atalanta finished a very impressive third in Serie A behind Juve and Napoli and ahead of the two Milan giants. It qualified the Bergamo-based side for the Champions League for the first time in their history.
In early July 2019, it was announced Pasalic has agreed a new deal to extend his Chelsea contract until 2022 and would be returning on loan to Atalanta for a second consecutive season.
