The announcement we had agreed terms with Atletico Paranaense for the transfer of Nathan was made on 14 May 2015 and the 19-year-old Brazilian joined on 1 July.

He had earned a reputation as an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and impressive pace. He said on signing: ‘I am very happy to be joining Chelsea and I hope I will be able to learn a lot and develop my game.’

Nathan, full name Nathan Allan de Souza, has represented Brazil at Under-17 and Under-20 level. He scored five goals in five games at the Under-17 World Cup in 2013 before being named in the team of the tournament.

He spent the 2015/16 season on loan in the Dutch top flight at Vitesse Arnhem, making 19 appearances and scoring twice. It was announced in July 2016 that he would be spending a further season at Vitesse and on the opening day of the 2016/17 campaign he scored a brace in a 4-1 win. In April 2017 came a significant triumph when he started the Dutch Cup final. Vitesse beat AZ 2-0 to win their first major trophy. Nathan played 32 games for them in 2016/17, 21 from the start and he scored five goals.

He joined French club Amiens on loan at the end of August 2017, before moving to Portugal in January 2018 for a loan to Belenenses until the end of the season. His two goals there impressively came against Benfica and Porto.

In July 2018, Nathan moved back to his homeland, for a season-long loan to Atletico Mineiro which in July 2019 was extended to 1 January 2020 with the player having established himself as a key part of the squad in preceding months.
