Niamh Charles

BIOGRAPHY

Attacking player Niamh Charles joined the squad from Liverpool Women in the summer of 2020 on three-year contract.

The England youth international came through Liverpool’s centre of excellence and development squad, before becoming a first-team regular. She made her Women’s Super League debut at just 16 and has since gone on to make 59 appearances, scoring 11 goals for Liverpool, with two coming against Chelsea.

We took a share of the points against Charles’ former team in December 2019 – one of only three draws for Chelsea in our 2019/20 Barclays FA Women’s Super League campaign.

Charles, fielded as a wide player, represented England at the 2016 FIFA Under-17s World Cup and her impressive form domestically continued to attract international recognition, having competed at the 2018 Under-20 World Cup where she helped the young Lionesses to bronze.

In 2018 she was also voted as the ‘Rising Star’ at the North-West Football Awards.

Charles had a terrific first season at Chelsea having made 29 appearances predominantly at wing-back. After our regular full-back Maren Mjelde sustained a long-term injury back in March 2021, the 22-year-old played a key part in our back-line for the remainder of the season, including playing in the Champions league final.

The pacy player recieved her first call up to the Lionesses' squad in the summer of 2020 and recieved her first senior cap in April in a friendly v France.
