Clive Walker, a radio and TV commentator for Chelsea throughout the season, adds some words to pictures illustrating the weekend game.
The former Blues player looks at important aspects and players from the our draw in the north...
At 2-0 down with 13 minutes to go we would have taken a point, however it is a point from a game when on other days we would have got three because Newcastle were poor defensively and we didn’t put them under pressure for much the game. Mistakes and indecision cost us goals as they have before this season but Ramires’s header could have won it near the end. After a very disappointing first half, we played a lot better second half.
Against Walsall midweek, Ramires along with Ruben Loftus-Cheek brought good energy to the side. The team at times has been lacking that bit of confidence just to go at the opposition and stretch them and run in beyond people. Again on Saturday when he came on, Ramires gave us the desire and belief to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Most of his touches seemed to have an impact on the game which is the tonic we need.
Willian has scored from similar free-kicks twice this month and they are very hard to defend. The kick has to be from a certain position on the field, it can’t be too high up towards the byline and it has to be on that side of the pitch for him. The Newcastle defensive line was not particularly good, it was pushed up the pitch and Tim Krul’s starting position was deep, he was worried about Willian going for goal. That gave a lot of space to put the ball into, and he got it absolutely spot on. That is what you aim to do, punish teams when they get it wrong.
I don’t know what was said at half-time to give Eden Hazard that extra confidence and bit of a buzz but we certain saw more of the Hazard we know, as we did last week against Arsenal. Teams have been doubling up and tripling up on him but as the game went on he was taking them on and riding the challenges.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s second-half enthusiasm was terrific for the rest of the lads. He got the bit between his teeth and I like that when he is pushing in, squeezing tight on players, unsettling them and making them pass. That type of play is infectious. He was an important player in the recovery of a point.
