Ladies reaction: Thriving on the pressure

Chelsea Ladies took a step closer to the FA Women’s Super League title last night (Sunday) after a convincing 4-0 victory away at Liverpool.
A brace from Ji So-Yun alongside goals from Fran Kirby and Eni Aluko handed Emma Hayes’s side all three points and leaves them two points clear at the top of the league with one game remaining. The season finale is this Sunday 4 October against Sunderland at Staines Town, tickets for which are currently available online.
Gemma Davison created both goals for Ji, and provided a constant menace to her former club in the north-west, and she felt the visitors’ quality proved the difference on the night. Speaking to the official Chelsea website after the game, Davison said: ‘We’re happy to get some goals.
‘We wanted to come here and perform, knowing it was going to be tough. Liverpool caused us a few problems but we scored four and probably could have had a few more as well.
‘Ji is one of the best in the world and the way she took the ball down and put it in the back of the net for her first goal is not something you see every week. She’s top-class and I’m just thankful she keeps turning my crosses into goals!’
Manchester City had leapfrogged the Blues earlier in the day with a 6-1 victory against Bristol Academy. While the girls were aware of goings-on in Manchester, Davison admitted their focus remained firmly on themselves in the build-up.
‘Of course we knew the City score but we were just very focused on what we were doing, as we have been all week. We have a good vibe around the dressing room at the moment. The best teams thrive on pressure and I felt we did that.
‘We’re very together and you could see that with our reaction at the end. We had a bit of a struggle when we temporarily went down to 10 players in the first half but we stuck together and that was important.
‘There’s a lot of world-class players in this team. We had a few goalscorers today but we were solid throughout the team, as we have been all season. If you can stay consistent and perform well in every game then you have a chance and we’re still here fighting at the top of the league.'
Chelsea Ladies versus Sunderland takes place this Sunday 4 October at Staines Town, kick-off at 6pm. Tickets are currently available online priced at £5 for adults and £3 for juniors/seniors. A victory will guarantee the Blues the WSL 1 title and complete a remarkable league and FA Women's Cup double.
