Conte: Important ones to win

Antonio Conte anticipates an open and entertaining match at Anfield as the Blues look to extend our 10-point lead over fourth-placed Liverpool.

Such is the gap between the league leaders and the Merseysiders that some might anticipate we go there determined mostly not to lose Tuesday night’s encounter, but speaking before he and the squad head north, Conte’s message is clear.

‘I want my team to try every game to fight to win and also to make the best decisions to adapt for the game,’ Conte says.

‘Tomorrow I think Liverpool and Chelsea both want to win the game and we could see an open game, not a tactical game.

‘The difficulty is high when you face this type of opponent but these type of games are always important to win because when you face teams with the same level, it is important for the confidence and to take three points from a rival.’

Conte has already spoken about the danger in facing a side coming off the back of three home defeats, and about how it is a very different Chelsea team they will take on compared with the one Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated at Stamford Bridge in September.

‘It is very difficult to explain this [Liverpool’s results in January] because I watched very well their defeats and I think in these games they were unlucky,’ he adds. ‘Tomorrow is a really tough test against a tough team.

‘This week we face two great opponents, Liverpool and Arsenal, but after these two games we have to play 14 games to finish the championship and for this reason, it is important the results against Liverpool and Arsenal but the league doesn’t finish after these two games.

'For sure defeat for Liverpool could be another hit mentally for them but it does not decide the season.'
