Foundation's Futsal team to make FA Cup bow

The Chelsea Foundation Futsal programme continues to go from strength to strength and there could be more success on the horizon when the Senior Futsal side make their debut in the FA Cup against Southampton next month.

The senior side have been playing their first season in the FA National Futsal League this year and they will come up against Southampton, who sit a division above them, in an FA Cup game at Seven Oaks School on Sunday 4 March at 1.15pm.

One player who would have been expected to play his part for the Blues in their FA Cup game is goalkeeper James Black but instead he will now join up with England Under-19 Futsal squad having been selected for their double-header against the Netherlands.

Black, who is in his first of two years on our Futsal programme at St Joseph’s College, will represent the Young Lions next month when they travel to the Dutch National Centre in Ziest for their two fixtures against the Netherlands on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 March.

Speaking about Black’s selection, Chelsea Foundation Futsal club secretary James Phillips said: ‘This is fantastic for the Futsal Club to have a player selected for the national team squads given that this is our first season in the National Futsal League.

‘Having players of this calibre wanting to play futsal for Chelsea FC Foundation Futsal Club shows we are going from strength to strength, and the exposure that the club will receive from having a player in the England set-up can hopefully attract more players to join this growing project.’

Black added: ‘I’m very happy to be included in the first Under-19 England squad.

‘It’s a great opportunity to test myself against some of Europe’s best, and hopefully I will be able to cement my position as number one goalkeeper for the Under-19s for the upcoming European Championships in 2019.’
