Ladies reaction: Brilliant Blues

Chelsea Ladies assistant manager Paul Green felt the timing of the Blues’ second goal was vital in beating Doncaster Rovers Belles in the Women’s FA Cup.

The WSL2 leaders proved to be frustrating opponents throughout the first half of our fifth-round tie, conceding only the one goal to Ji So-Yun despite being dominated, but an early strike from Fran Kirby after the break set us on our way to a big victory.

Drew Spence was on target a few minutes later and Erin Cuthbert’s brace sandwiched a penalty by Ramona Bachmann as we ran out 6-0 winners to book a quarter-final trip to Liverpool in March.

‘I thought it was a brilliant team performance from start to finish and we thoroughly deserved to win,’ said Green. ‘To score six goals and have them shared around was terrific.

‘There were some good team goals, some good individual ones, and I felt the two subs who came on, Eni [Aluko] and Erin, made a massive impact on the game as well. Overall, we’re very happy.

‘The second goal was all important. We dominated in the first half, but while it was only 1-0 there was always a chance for Doncaster to get back into the game.

‘We went from strength to strength after we got that goal, but I thought Doncaster played well and were a credit to themselves and the division below.’

A trip to Liverpool awaits us, with a visit to Wembley potentially only one game away for the winner of that tie.

‘We treat every competition we go in to the same and the FA Cup is the showpiece of the women’s game, so the final at Wembley is something everyone strives to get to,’ he said. ‘We’re no different. We put a high priority on every competition we enter.'
