PMB: Manchester City v Chelsea - history

Continuing the build-up to Sunday's match, club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton recall some of our past encounters with the Citizens...

We Have History

Manchester City have won one of their past four home league games against the Blues. Last season, a second-half blitz from the champions elect was enough to blow the challengers away on their own soil. City had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when Gary Cahill diverted a dangerous Jesus Navas cross, giving Thibaut Courtois no chance.

The England defender went a long way to making amends by blocking Sergio Aguero’s goal-bound shot soon after the restart. The value of his intervention doubled after Kevin De Bruyne thudded the ball against the bar with the goal gaping, and trebled when Cesc Fabregas found Diego Costa with a brilliant long pass.

With Chelsea fans making all the noise in the stadium, the striker controlled, shrugged off Nicolas Otamendi, and beat Claudio Bravo with ease to level.

Ten minutes later Diego Costa turned on the halfway line and fed the surging Willian, who streaked clear and shot across Bravo to make it 2-1. As the game drew to a close another searching pass from deep, this time by Marcos Alonso, set Eden Hazard clear.

The Belgian controlled the ball with his torso without breaking stride, speeding past Aleksandar Kolarov, then deceiving Bravo with his shot: suddenly it was 3-1 and eight wins in a row for Antonio Conte’s men.

In injury time there were unsavoury incidents when Aguero two-footed David Luiz, rightly seeing a red card, and Fernandinho was also dismissed for grabbing Fabregas by the throat.

The result made Conte the first coach to record a top-flight double over any side managed by Pep Guardiola, and it is the Catalan’s only home defeat in the Premier League.

Highlights of that game, as voted for by fans on this website, are below...

Since losing to Chelsea last season, Man City have remained unbeaten in their 26 home league games, winning 21 of them.
