Marco van Ginkel made his Chelsea debut as a late substitute in a 2-0 win over Hull City on the opening day of the 2013/14 season, and was then handed his first start in a Champions League match against Basel.
However, after starting a Capital One Cup tie against Swindon Town, Van Ginkel sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
He worked hard to recover and played for the Chelsea Under-21 side before the end of the season as they headed towards the league championship at their level. He was also called on by the Netherlands to help with a pre-World Cup training camp.
Having played a part in Jose Mourinho's pre-season programme, it was announced on 1 September that Van Ginkel would spend the season on loan in Serie A at AC Milan.
He made two Serie A appearances prior to sustaining an ankle injury in training in December. He returned to action in late January, starting an away game against Lazio, and finished the season strongly. He earned a regular place in the side and had made 16 starts and two sub appearances by the end of the campaign. He scored in a 2-1 home win over Roma.
It was announced on 10 July 2015 that Van Ginkel would spend the season on loan in the Barclays Premier League, with Stoke City his destination. However, on the final day of the winter transfer window, he switched to PSV Eindhoven in his native Netherlands. He played 21 games for Stoke before terminating that contract to join the Eredivisie's top club. He scored on his first start, against Utrecht and went on to enjoy a hugely successful few months.
His eight goals in 16 appearances contributed significantly to PSV winning the Dutch league title when they pipped Ajax on the final day.
Van Ginkel also played every minute of an epic Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid, only narrowly losing out on penalties to a team that went on to reach the final. He scored his penalty in the shoot-out, as he had done earlier in the season for Stoke in a League Cup semi-final at Anfield. His form helped him back into the Dutch senior team.
After an injury hampered his pre-season preparations, Van Ginkel became a regular in our Under-23 side, adding nouse and experience to Adi Viveash's young team.
On 31 December, he signed a new two-and-a-half year contract at Chelsea and rejoined PSV on loan until the end of the campaign.
Van Ginkel was on target in his first game back for PSV and followed it up with another goal the following week in a 4-3 win against Heerenveen.
Having quickly found the form which served PSV so well during his first spell at the club, Van Ginkel then scored in successive victories in February against Utrecht and NEC Nijmegen. By the end of the campaign he had scored at the impressive rate of seven goals in 15 appearances as his loan club finished third in the Dutch top flight.
It was announced in July 2017 Van Ginkel had signed a one-year contract extension, committing himself to Chelsea until 2020, and that he had agreed to return to PSV on loan for the season ahead.
It was a season to remember for Van Ginkel as he captained PSV to the title, netting an impressive 14 goals in 28 league games from midfield. Ten of his goals came before the winter break, with the other four netted in the dramatic title run-in as PSV held off their great rivals Ajax.
Unfortunately, however, in July 2018 he had to undergo further major surgery - a procedure relating to the revision reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament and treatment of chondral damage in his knee. The expected recovery time was approximately eight months.
Chelsea are the second professional club of Van Ginkel's career. He came through the youth system at Vitesse Arnhem before making his debut in the Dutch top flight near the end of the 2009/10 season, aged 17.
Van Ginkel made one start and three substitute appearances for Vitesse in the 2009/10 season, with six starts and a further 11 appearances from the bench in 2010/11. His first game that season was away at Ajax where he scored his first senior goal, adding four more before the end of the campaign.
By 2011/12 the young player was a regular in the side, starting in 36 of his 38 appearances and finding the net six times, nearly doubling that total to 11 goals the following season, scored from 41 appearances.
Vitesse finished in fourth position in the Dutch league behind the traditional big three of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord, therefore qualifying for the Europa League.
He was named Dutch Talent of the Year for that 2012/13 season, awarded to the best young player, joining a list which includes former Chelsea players Arjen Robben, Salomon Kalou and Boudewijn Zenden.
Van Ginkel represented his country at Under-19 level before graduating to the Under-21s, representing his country at the 2013 European Under-21 Championships.
He made his debut for the Dutch senior team in November 2012, when he came on after 59 minutes of a 0-0 friendly draw against Germany. He won his second cap in a friendly against Portugal and is the regular Under-21 team captain.
In 2016 he returned to the senior Dutch side for the first time since his knee injury, coming on against England at Wembley and making a futher substitute appearance away against Ireland in May 2016.
