Chelsea Ladies added Norway international Maria Thorisdottir to the squad in September 2017, shortly before the start of a new WSL1 season.
The defender was previously at Klepp in her homeland and just prior to becoming a Blue, had represented Norway at the European Championships. She played two of her nation’s three games in the Netherlands alongside her new Chelsea team-mate Maren Mjelde.
On signing a contract with Chelsea until 2019, Thorisdottir said: ‘I am very proud to be part of Chelsea Ladies, it is a big dream coming true and I am really looking forward to getting to know all the girls and being part of the team.
‘I have heard a lot of good things about the group. It was an easy choice. I know Maren Mjelde and she is a very good football player and a person, so it is nice to have her here.’
Describing her playing style, she said: ‘I am maybe like a Viking. I like to go hard into duels, win the ball in the air and try to play my team-mates in well.’
Thorisdottir played for Norway at junior levels before making her debut for the full national team against Iceland in March 2015. In the World Cup in Canada that summer, she helped the side to two impressive results in the group stage, a 3-1 win against the Ivory Coast and a 1-1 draw with Germany. She came on at half-time in a defeat by England in the knockout stage.
Early in her career she was in the Norway Under-17 squad that reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2009 and she played in the final at Under-19 level two years later.
