After scoring an extra-time winner in our World Sevens Football opener against Everton, Blues forward Aggie Beever-Jones emphasised that the standards expected at Chelsea had to be maintained alongside 'having a good time' at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Our first match of the seven-a-side tournament, which is played over two 15-minute halves and has rolling substitutes, saw the Blues face off against fellow Women's Super League side Everton.
Our starters were goalkeeper Livia Peng, Ellie Carpenter, Keira Walsh, Sjoeke Nusken, Wieke Kaptein and the fit-again Mayra Ramirez, with many of the Blues, to the delight of the west London crowd, producing spectacular moves during the pre-match walkouts.
Once the action got underway, goals from Erin Cuthbert, Beever-Jones and Nusken ensured the score was locked at 3-3 come the end of the 30-minute match. A five-a-side, golden-goal five-minute period then followed to help separate the teams.
The jeopardy of extra time saw both sides begin tentatively, but after good work from Lauren James, Beever-Jones popped up with her second of the contest to end the game and ensure the Blues claimed a 4-3 victory.
‘It's tough,’ the striker said. ‘I know for me, I love having a good time, and I play my best football when I'm having a good time. There’s enjoyment in that, but then equally, we're still Chelsea, and we have high standards.
‘Sonia (Bompastor) said to us that these are the kind of fun things that you do as a kid when you're young,' Beever-Jones reflected. 'You play and it's seven-a-side, it's manic, and you're exhausted.
‘It’s getting used to the transitional side of it. You're constantly in a one-v-one, really, and if you haven't got a player, someone else has got your player, so it's a two-v-one across the pitch.
‘So it's physically quite demanding, but for me, I love that side of football, so it's not too bad, and I think the role of the subs helps, too.'
The Blues are competing in the World Sevens tournament for the first time, and with that comes a learning curve, as Beever Jones explained.
‘We've not been in this competition before, so we're learning a lot. I think we'll come away with some stuff to learn and then equally enjoy it, and hopefully we can continue and progress our way into the final.
‘Hopefully, we can continue having fun and keep progressing in the competition.'
The Chelsea faithful are, as always, on hand to support the Blues at the Gtech, which Beever-Jones says means a lot to the players.
‘When I was coming on, I could hear a few of the Chelsea fans,' she explained. 'A few of the bunch of girls who have always turned up for me, and I could hear them, which was really, really lovely.
‘Apparently, when you score, you get a special coin, and you give it away to a fan, so I've done that for those girls as well, which is so nice.’
The Blues face our second match of the day against Leicester City at 8pm on Thursday, before taking on London City Lionesses at 6pm on Friday. You can find out more about the World Sevens in our explainer piece here.
