Moises Caicedo says he will never stop trying to improve as a player and reveals how he has been setting an example for Chelsea’s new arrivals as they settle into the squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The midfielder is currently in the USA with the rest of the Blues, preparing for our opening match of the Club World Cup against LAFC in Atlanta this evening.
The new-look tournament provides Caicedo with another opportunity to impress during 2025, after being chosen by supporters and team-mates as our standout performer in the campaign just finished, picking up the Chelsea Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards.
Despite that recognition, the Ecuadorian is never satisfied with his own performance, and insists there is still more to come from him moving forward.
‘In every game I try to give my best,’ he explained. ‘I do not put a limit on that, the sky is the limit. I have always told myself that and I believe in every game I can do better and improve.
‘I am very happy with what I have been doing in this team during the season, how I have helped the team, and now I’m going to keep trying to reach another level. That is my mentality.’
The next chance for Caicedo to continue that pursuit of constant improvement comes in the Club World Cup and, ahead of today’s opening fixture for Chelsea at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, our midfielder is excited to get going in America.
He said: ‘It’s going to be a great tournament and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great feeling to be here and everyone is working hard to make sure we perform well. That is the most important thing.
‘In every game we are going to give our best and do as much as possible to reach our target.’
There could be some new faces in action for the Blues when we take on LAFC, with June signings Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, Mike Penders and Mamadou Sarr all travelling to the USA, while Andrey Santos is also in line to make his competitive debut for the club after returning from his loan at Strasbourg in time for this tournament.
‘I always try to help the new players in the squad,’ added Caicedo, who has showcased his leadership on and off the pitch while also captaining the Blues during the 2024/25 campaign. ‘Mamadou has the French players, of course. Andrey is close to me and I can help him, Dario also as he speaks Spanish.
‘I try to help them in any way I can, but I also try to show them. I want to show them every day on the pitch what I do, how I train, how I am as a professional.
‘So I am happy they are all here, they are all great talents and they will all help us.’
Those newcomers join a squad that arrives in the USA in good spirits, following a successful conclusion to our 2024/25 campaign. In addition to sealing our return to the UEFA Champions League with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, Chelsea have already lifted one piece of silverware this year after beating Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final.
However, just like his own performance, Caicedo is never satisfied with the team’s success, and is hoping this Blues squad can give the supporters plenty more to cheer about in the future, starting at the Club World Cup.
‘Winning the Conference League was really good. The confidence is higher than before because we lifted a great trophy, but that is in the past,’ he concluded.
‘Now there is another trophy ahead of us and we will all give our best because we want the trophy. It would be really special for all the team and the fans, so we want to do it.
‘I think the fans were happy with us because we finished the season really well. We finished in the Champions League places, we won the Conference League and now we are in this tournament and we will give our best for the club.
‘For sure, the fans want to be proud and happy because we are doing well, and we will try to do even better for them.’
