The countdown to Christmas is on and every day across the Chelsea Official App and Website, we will be bringing you exclusive Blues content! We start with one of the stars of our Magic of Blue campaign video, Alejandro Garnacho.
With 700,000 Londoners experiencing loneliness, Chelsea FC, the Chelsea Foundation, the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust and local charities are working together to help support those who may spend this Christmas alone.
There are fundraisers and opportunities for supporters to donate gifts on upcoming matchdays at both Stamford Bridge and Kingsmeadow – information for which can be found here – while those unable to make it to the stadiums can donate via this link
The growing epidemic of loneliness was spotlighted in our Christmas film, The Magic of Blue, in which Garnacho donned a blue Santa outfit. And it was there we spoke to the 21-year-old about his Christmas traditions and what he remembers from years past.
What are your first memories of Christmas?
'When I was little, I remember having Christmas with my whole family. We had a great time with all my cousins, all my uncles and aunts, my entire family, and those are the first memories I have.'
What is the first Christmas gift you remember receiving?
'It’s impossible to remember, but they were probably toys from that era that I liked.'
What was the first thing you would do when you woke up on Christmas morning?
'I went down to the tree to see if there were any presents!'
What does Christmas Day look like to you now?
'Things don’t really change now because whether it's Christmas or summer, a footballer’s life is always the same routine. We keep playing and having matches, but I do try to get together with my family as much as possible to spend the evening together or have dinner.'
What is one Spanish tradition you think we should adopt in England?
'In Spain, we ate a lot of seafood on Christmas Day, but I don't know if it's the same in England. It was a lots of seafood, and nougat.'
Is there a particular Christmas Day you remember growing up?
'No, not really. I think every year is special, important to celebrate, and they've all been very beautiful and special for me.'
Have you had an English Christmas dinner?
'Since I came to England, I've always celebrated Christmas at home with the same traditions, the same food, so nothing has changed for me.'
Do you own a Christmas jumper?
'No.'
What was your first experience of playing football over Christmas?
'One of my best memories, to be honest, was playing a match on Boxing Day two years ago. I scored two goals, so I think that Christmas was very important and very special for me.'
What do you hope for this Christmas?
'Nothing, really. I hope that everyone, and my whole family is healthy, that we are all happy and together.'
