Jesse Derry – Sporting Lisbon

The 19-year-old winger featured in three of Sporting’s four games in August, all off the bench, as they made an unbeaten start to the season.

After being held to an opening day draw by Estrela Amadora, Derry played his part as the Lisbon side bounced back by beating Vitoria Guimaraes 3-2, then ended the month with a resounding 4-0 win at Rio Ave to go second in the Portuguese top flight.

Genesis Antwi, Filip Jorgensen – Strasbourg

Antwi and Jorgensen both made their Strasbourg debuts in the French club’s opening day defeat away at Marseille, with Jorgensen between the posts while Antwi lined up at left-back.

The latter switched to the right side of Strasbourg’s back line for their first home game of the season, against Lens, which also brought their first victory after fighting back from a goal down to win 2-1.

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen – Portsmouth

The teenager winger’s debut came as a half-time substitute, but he was unable to turn the game around in a 3-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers. However, when he was handed his chance from the start in Portsmouth’s next match, he wasted no time making an impact.

There were just seven minutes on the clock when Kavuma-McQueen netted the first goal of his senior career to give Pompey an early lead at Lincoln City, firing his team’s first chance of the game into the bottom corner. It was an advantage Portsmouth would not relinquish, on their way to a 3-1 win. Kavuma-McQueen retained his spot in the line-up for their next game, playing the first hour of a 2-1 loss at Bristol City.

Dastan Satpayev – Burnley

The Kazakh forward made his first appearance for Burnley as a substitute in a 3-1 loss away at West Bromwich Albion, before his first start arrived on the wing in a Carabao Cup trip to Bradford City.

Satpayev was withdrawn after 80 minutes of a 0-0 draw, meaning he was powerless to prevent his side suffering defeat in the penalty shoot-out. The 18-year-old then featured for the full 90 minutes as the Clarets were beaten 4-1 at Norwich City.

Reggie Walsh – Wigan Athletic

Walsh went straight into the starting XI for Wigan in League One, slotting into the centre of midfield for their game against Leyton Orient. It could have been a memorable debut if it were not for the linesman’s flag, as the 17-year-old came closest to an equaliser for the Latics when he lashed in an excellent volley from 15 yards, only to be denied a first senior goal by the officials.

Wigan would eventually lose that game 2-0, but Walsh had done enough in his first appearance to earn a spot from the start in their next game, playing the full 90 minutes as they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Wimbledon.

Caleb Wiley – Preston North End

Wiley made his first Preston appearance the day after completing his loan move to Deepdale, coming on as a late substitute in their 1-0 Championship defeat at Charlton Athletic.

Max Merrick – Hartlepool United

The goalkeeper made a great start to his time with Hartlepool in the National League, keeping back-to-back clean sheets in his first two games to help his side claim maximum points from their opening two fixtures.

After a 2-0 win over recently relegated Barrow, Merrick had to produce three good saves to keep the score goalless at half-time against Aldershot Town, before Hartlepool took a 1-0 win. However, he was powerless as he was beaten for the first time this season when Eastleigh netted a 97th-minute winner.

Ishe Samuels-Smith – Notts County

The defender made two substitute appearances for Notts County in August, both in League One, helping them see out important results on both occasions. First Samuels-Smith and the newly-promoted Magpies held on for a 2-2 draw away at expected promotion contenders Luton Town, before playing a similar role as Notts County beat Burton Albion 2-1 to claim their first win of the season.

Ollie Harrison – Wimbledon

Harrison made his debut in senior football as a substitute in Wimbledon’s 3-0 League One loss to Huddersfield Town, before his first start in a 1-1 EFL Trophy draw at Leyton Orient, in which they lost the resulting penalty shoot-out. He started again when the Dons were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Fulham, but came on to help Wimbledon net a late winner at home against Wigan Athletic, securing their first league victory of the season 1-0.

Kaiden Wilson – Rochdale

The young defender has featured in every game since completing his loan to Rochdale, who are returning to the Football League this season. He came on as a substitute in their Carabao Cup first round exit to Bradford City and again in the League Two opener at Newport County. Those performances earned him a place in the starting line-up against Colchester United and Crawley Town, being unfortunate to concede a penalty in the latter, which denied newly-promoted Rochdale their first point of the season.

Alejandro Garnacho – Aston Villa

Alejandro Garnacho's debut for Villa came as a late substitute with his loan club already trailing 4-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. He came on again for the last 12 minutes as they tried, in vain, to salvage a point against Arsenal.

Axel Disasi – Crystal Palace

Disasi made his Crystal Palace debut in their final game of August. The French defender came off the bench to replace Takehiro Tomiyasu for the last 15 minutes of the Eagles’ 4-1 home defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League.

Harrison Murray-Campbell – Kortrijk

The young defender made his first two appearances in the Belgian top division, coming off the bench as a late substitute in Kortrijk’s home defeats to Royal Antwerp and Charleroi.

Late moves

With the transfer window not closing until 2 September – and later in other countries such as Scotland – several players completed loan switches after August and will play their football away from Stamford Bridge this term.

At senior level, Benoit Badiashile headed to Napoli for the campaign, Dario Essugo made a switch to Strasbourg, Robert Sanchez headed to Como and Mamadou Sarr will spend the campaign in Spain at Real Sociedad.

From our Cobham Nex Gen squad, Landon Emenalo and Shim Mhueka joined Scottish giants Celtic for the season.

Meanwhile, Dujuan Richards and Kiano Dyer will look to continue their development in the Football League with AFC Wimbledon and Chesterfield respectively. Goalkeepers Ted Curd and Hudson Sands will spend the season with Boreham Wood and Dulwich Hamlet.
