Our young Blues take on Cheltenham Town in the Papa Johns Trophy round of 16 this evening as Mark Robinson’s men will be looking to go one step further than they did in last year’s competition while also extending their unbeaten run.
It has been an impressive run so far from our development squad and sights will be set on a place in the last eight of the competition.
A number of players including Omari Hutchinson, Charlie Webster and Josh Brooking who are likely to be involved in today’s game were a part of the men's first team’s trip to Abu Dhabi and will be in contention for starting spots against the Robins.
Round of 32
Chelsea put in a fantastic performance against Peterborough United to make it into the last 16.
It was back-to-back braces for Malik Mothersille as he added to his two goals against Leyton Orient with a pair against the Posh.
Cesare Casadei scored a remarkable effort from distance which had the home crowd joining in on the applause. It was voted Chelsea's Goal of the Month.
Ben Elliott added a fourth with a fine goal to further underline how dominant in the attacking phase we were all game.
The home side struggled to deal with our direct attacks which came as a result of fast passing combinations in the middle of the park.
Last fixture against opponents
Our last fixture against Cheltenham Town was in last year’s group-stages as we were involved in a 0-0 draw. The scoreline however was not an indication of how the game went as both sides had good chances to win it throughout the contest.
Webster drew out a quality save from the goalkeeper while Lewis Baker went agonisingly close from a free-kick.
Despite eventually losing the game on penalties, our opponents bowed out of the competition finishing bottom of the group as in three attempts they failed to win a game in normal time.
Our opponents
The Robins sit in 17th place in League One currently as they have won two of their last five games.
Their most recent fixture was a 1-0 defeat away from home against Forest Green Rovers.
Nevertheless, to get to this stage of the competition, the Gloucestershire-based side had to beat Forest Green Rovers on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
A win here will see the young Blues extend our unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 games.
Four wins in our last five games shows we are in good form going into this game but our boys will be wary of the threat the League One side pose.
