Chelsea Under-21s remain top of the Premier League 2 after a commanding performance at Kingsmeadow on Saturday, with three first-half goals and a stoppage-time strike capping a brilliant display from start to finish.

The Blues got off to a dominant start at home, with Leo Cardoso, lively from the first whistle, opening the scoring in the 26th minute.

Harrison Murray-Campbell doubled the lead with a fierce strike from outside the area, marking his seventh goal of the 2025/26 campaign. Just three minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen added another after a commanding display, sending Chelsea into the interval 3-0 ahead.

Harry Hudson’s Under-21s carried the momentum into the second half, causing constant problems for the visitors. The patience paid off in stoppage time when our top scorer Shumaira Mheuka added the final touch, securing the win and cementing our place at the top as the play-offs approach.

Our Under-21s made a bright, purposeful start at Kingsmeadow in our final regular home game of the Premier League 2 season, immediately putting Sunderland under pressure. The first chance fell to winger Cardoso, who drove into the penalty area and unleashed a low strike across goal, only for it to drift just wide of the near post. It was an early warning - the Blues meant business.

Another opportunity came soon after. Genesis Antwi burst down the flank with electric pace before cutting the ball back into the danger area. Harrison McMahon, returning after scoring in his previous appearance against Birmingham City, improvised with a close-range flick on target, but keeper Adam Richardson reacted sharply to make the save.

Sunderland showed they were dangerous too. Charlie Dinsdale struck powerfully from distance, but Max Merrick was equal to it, producing an outstanding stop to keep the scores level in a fast, open opening spell.

Breaking the deadlock!

The breakthrough our dominance deserved soon arrived. A long diagonal from Murray-Campbell found Cardoso wide on the flank, and the winger did the rest. Showing composure and skill, he twisted past his marker, entered the box and drilled a fierce low strike beyond the helpless keeper into the corner. It was a superb individual goal, giving the Blues a fully merited 1-0 lead.

Sunderland almost responded immediately. Finn Geragusian hammered a shot from inside the area, but Merrick was alert, producing another solid save to keep the visitors at bay.

We continued to push forward. Mheuka met an inviting cross from Antwi and attempted an acrobatic overhead kick, which flashed narrowly wide. It was a late let-off for Richardson before the break.

Blues in full control

Determined to capitalise on our dominance, the Blues struck again in emphatic fashion. Defender Murray-Campbell stepped up from the back and unleashed a venomous drive from the edge of the area, the ball screaming into the net to double the advantage.

There was still time for more before the interval and Chelsea delivered. Kavuma-McQueen produced a dazzling run down the wing, weaving between defenders with confidence and power, before firing a fierce shot from a tight angle into the far bottom corner, leaving the keeper with no chance.

Three goals and relentless attacking had given the Blues complete control. We headed into half-time firmly in command.

Pressing for more

We returned to the pitch with the same ruthless mentality shown in the first half, immediately looking to extend our lead. Midfielder Kiano Dyer combined neatly with Antwi, who picked him out in space, but his powerful strike drifted just wide of the far post.

Cardoso continued his search for a second goal, unleashing a sweeping effort from inside the penalty area. Richardson reacted sharply, getting down to palm the shot away and deny the Blues a fourth.

Captain Mheuka also pushed to add his name to the scoresheet. He met another dangerous cross from Antwi and attempted a clever flicked finish from close range, but the Sunderland keeper stood firm once again to keep the chance out.

Icing on the cake

Chelsea continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, staying firmly in control of the contest. The perfect finish arrived in stoppage time when our striker deservedly added his name to the scoresheet.

Dyer threaded a delightful through ball into his path and Mheuka responded with a surging run before firing confidently into the back of the net, securing the fourth goal and rounding off a brilliant afternoon for the Blues.

What it means

Following this result, Chelsea Under-21s remain top of the Premier League 2 table. It marks our 13th win of the season and extends our lead to three points over second-placed Manchester United, with 40 points on the board.
