Chelsea Cobham Next Gen leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur into second in the Premier League 2 table after a Harrison McMahon goal and a brace from Chizaram Ezenwata sealed a 3-1 win.

It didn’t take the Blues long to take the lead, with McMahon scoring his second goal in as many matches by rounding goalkeeper Samual Archer and finishing after being put through one-on-one by Reggie Watson.

Ezenwata doubled our advantage before the interval with his seventh goal of the season across all competitions for the Blues.

We defended well for much of the second period, but Spurs pulled a goal back with 14 minutes to play when James Rowswell found the net. Despite late pressure from the hosts, we made sure of all three points when Ezenwata struck his second in stoppage time to seal victory.

Taking control

We exploited Tottenham’s high backline from the off, and Sol Gordon had an opportunity inside five minutes. A good ball forward from Calvin Diakite put the Blues winger through, but Archer saved well to turn the ball behind for a corner.

It proved only a momentary reprieve for the home side as we soon broke the deadlock. Watson played a long ball over the top to McMahon, who remained composed to take the ball around the goalkeeper and slot home.

We continued to probe the Tottenham defence across the remainder of the opening 45 minutes – and were eventually rewarded with our second of the afternoon.

Three minutes before the interval, Chelsea goalkeeper Freddy Bernal hit a long pass forward and Ezenwata manoeuvred his way beyond the last defender and confidently finished beyond Archer.

Gordon almost added a third before half-time when he went through and aimed for the far post. However, his shot was cleared off the line. Leo Cardoso was there for the follow-up, but he was also denied.

Searching for more

After the break, we kept pushing and came close to extending our advantage from corners, with Olutayo Subuloye asserting his dominance in the penalty area.

Corners from Watson found the head of Subuloye repeatedly, with the Blues skipper consistently overpowering his marker, but he couldn't divert his attempts on target.

Ezenwata also came close, utilising his excellent hold-up play to manufacture an opportunity. The Chelsea striker had his back to goal when he received possession, but created half a yard to get his shot off. Unfortunately, it curled too late and went just wide of the far post.

Tottenham’s skipper, Roswell, halved the deficit from a set piece with 76 minutes left on the clock. Yet it was the Blues who had the final say in this derby.

Sealing the win

As the game entered additional time, Tottenham earned a free kick which they opted to take quickly. Substitute Harrison Bettoni reacted quickest to intercept the ball and get a shot away.

His attempt was too powerful for Archer, who palmed the ball back out to Ezenwata. The Blues striker made no mistake and thumped a shot into the back of the net to put the game to bed and ensure all three points returned to Cobham.

What it means

Our 3-1 win on derby day means that we are up to 16 points in PL2 after seven matches. We have leapfrogged Spurs and now sit in second position.
