Chelsea Under-21s extended our unbeaten run to eight matches with a commanding performance against Wolves at Aggborough Stadium on Friday evening, scoring three times before the break and adding another in the second half to remain top of the Premier League 2 table.

The Blues were outstanding in the opening half and took control through Jesse Derry, whose close-range header from six yards brought up his 12th goal of the season.

Chelsea quickly built on that advantage, with Harrison McMahon doubling our lead with a clinical finish before Ryan Kavuma-McQueen added a third just three minutes later with an excellent strike to complete a dominant first-half display.

Substitute Reggie Walsh then made an instant impact after the break, needing just three minutes to get on the scoresheet and net our fourth of the evening, his fourth goal of the campaign. From there, the Blues saw the game out with confidence to secure back-to-back league wins and consecutive clean sheets.

Finding our rhythm

With both sides starting brightly, the contest quickly developed into an intense affair as each team looked to gain an early foothold.

Wolves created the first opening when Tom Edozie lined up a free-kick in a dangerous position. His effort was well-struck, but Max Merrick reacted brilliantly, timing his dive perfectly to keep the Blues level.

Chelsea responded with a period of sustained pressure, pushing the hosts back and probing inside the penalty area. Derry produced a brilliant run, driving at the Wolves defence before cutting the ball back for McMahon, who arrived at pace and fired goalwards. A deflection off a defender sent the effort looping just over the crossbar, denying the Blues an opener.

Derry remained a constant threat out wide, linking sharply with McMahon as Chelsea’s attacking rhythm grew. The winger drove into the area and unleashed a fierce strike from a tight angle, but Wolves keeper Alfie Brooks reacted brilliantly to keep the sides level.

We came closest soon after with a superb move down the right. Genesis Antwi surged forward on an overlapping run and delivered a teasing cross into the box, where Derry met it with a venomous strike. Brooks produced an outstanding save, tipping the effort over the bar as Chelsea’s pressure intensified approaching the 20-minute mark.

Our moment arrives

It felt as though the breakthrough was imminent - and when it came, it did so in style.

Kavuma-McQueen was the architect, delivering a brilliant ball into the penalty area where Derry met it with a precise header into the bottom corner, giving the Blues a well-deserved lead.

Chelsea did not let up. With momentum firmly on our side, a second goal followed shortly after. Kavuma-McQueen was involved again, whipping in another dangerous cross. Shumaira Mheuka rose to meet it, forcing a smart save from Brooks, but McMahon was quickest to react, poking the loose ball home from close range to double the advantage.

Only gets better

Chelsea continued to play with confidence and intensity, and the third goal was always on the horizon.

Kavuma-McQueen turned provider into scorer with a moment of genuine quality. Picking up possession outside the area, he drove forward purposefully, weaving past defenders before unleashing a thunderous strike from distance that left Brooks with no chance, flying into the top corner. It was a brilliant finish - the winger’s eighth goal of the season.

The Blues remained on the front foot for the remainder of the first half, keeping Wolves under constant pressure and probing their defence at every opportunity. After a dominant opening 45 minutes, we went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Super sub

The second half settled into a steadier rhythm than the first, but Chelsea remained the more threatening side.

Under-21s head coach Harry Hudson made a tactical switch by bringing on Walsh - and it paid instant dividends. The substitute wasted no time making an impact, getting on the scoresheet for Chelsea’s first goal of the second half.

Derry charged forward and played the ball into Mheuka, whose initial effort was blocked by Brooks, but Walsh was alert to the rebound and calmly tapped it home to make it 4-0.

Antwi came close to adding his name to the scoresheet, surging forward on a powerful run before unleashing a low strike that looked destined for the bottom corner. However, Brooks reacted brilliantly to palm the effort away.

Chelsea continued to dominate in the closing stages, causing constant problems for the hosts while remaining disciplined to preserve the clean sheet. The Blues left the Midlands with all three Premier League 2 points and valuable momentum heading into the final game of the regular season, with the play-offs firmly in sight.

What it means

Following this result, Chelsea remain top of the Premier League 2 table. This was our 14th win of the season from 19 games, giving us 43 points - three ahead of second-placed Manchester United.
