Sonia Bompastor faced the media at Cobham this afternoon ahead of our Women's Super League clash against Brighton at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday.

Chelsea are straight back into WSL action after lifting the League Cup on Sunday, and will have several notable absentees for Wednesday night's match.

Centre-back trio Nathalie Bjorn, Millie Bright and Naomi Girma have all been ruled out of the clash – you can read more about their respective injuries here.

Here is a rundown of the other major talking points from today's press conference...

Momentum after trophy win

Bompastor: 'When you win a trophy, it's always a big confidence boost. And when the players are playing with full confidence, that's when they can perform at their best level. From that point of view, it's really positive. We know the quality we have in the squad, and we know when we perform at our best level, we can beat every team.'

Brighton test

SB: 'We know we still have six games left in this block and we want to take it game by game, one by one. We are really focusing on the game tomorrow evening. Brighton are a team that play really good football. We know we have a big game with a challenge facing us, but we'll be ready.'

Sam Kerr's Asian Cup performances

SB: 'It's great for her to be back with Australia; I know how much she loves playing for her country. She's getting a lot of minutes, so it's good for her confidence and her momentum. She's scoring really important goals as well. She scored a great goal this morning. So I'm pleased for her, and obviously, it's great news for us.'

Veerle Buurman stepping up

SB: 'Veerle has been performing really well with us since January. She's playing a lot more minutes and I think you can see when a young player has a lot of talent – and getting minutes – she can develop herself. She's proving to the WSL she's one of the best players in that position, even if she's still young.'

On Lauren James

SB: 'LJ is an important player for us. I've been having such fun with her in the squad, in training sessions, and in games. It's so nice for a manager when you're at Chelsea to have a player with her quality. It's a strong signal for everyone to be able to keep a player like LJ for the future of the club.'
