Former Blues captains John Terry and Gary Cahill can’t wait to be back on the Stamford Bridge pitch with Chelsea Legends tomorrow and have picked out some of the players to watch in our clash with Liverpool.
The centre-back duo were at Cobham on Friday afternoon, as the Chelsea Legends squad trained under the watchful eye of our UEFA Champions League-winning head coach Roberto Di Matteo, before taking on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Between them, the pair captained Chelsea to a total of five Premier League titles, some of them when lining up alongside each other in defence, not to mention their roles in that first-ever Champions League triumph under Di Matteo.
Speaking after training at Cobham, their excitement at being back with their team-mates was clear, but more than anything it was the chance to be reunited with the Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge which had them most looking forward to Saturday.
‘It’s so great to be back, in the dressing room earlier and then out on the pitch, just having a bit of fun today before the game tomorrow,’ said Terry. ‘So we’re really excited. It was good to see the boys and great for us to be back at the Bridge playing.
‘People are enjoying the football they’re seeing today, but there is a generation of dads and older people that watched us playing and grew up with us winning leagues and FA Cups and big trophies at this football club.
‘With the international break as well, I just think it’s a great opportunity to come down. So if you get the opportunity we’d love you to be there. It’s going to be relaxed before, there’s going to be lots of photos and the boys coming over to the fans and saying hello and reminiscing about old times.
‘But once we’re on the pitch we’re there to win, because they beat us at Anfield, so we’re after revenge. We want to win and put on a good show for the supporters.’
Having spent some time on the pitch with their former team-mates again at Cobham, it was put to the two Blues legends who they are most excited to see back playing at Stamford Bridge tomorrow, and it proved hard to narrow it down to just one.
‘It’s great to see the boys, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen some of them so it’s great to get back together,’ began Cahill.
‘Diego [Costa] looked quite sharp today. He’s as excitable as ever, an absolute character, he’s a madman. His English is still not great, but what a guy. So I’ll say him.
‘To get the team we’ve got is unbelievable. Guys have travelled from overseas to come here and give up their time for a great cause in the Chelsea Foundation. So if you can come out and support us it would mean a lot to us.
‘It will be great to see these players on show again, the likes of Diego, JT, Pete [Cech], John [Mikel] Obi , Eden [Hazard] back, the list goes on…’
‘Gaz and Obi can still play which is good to see, but some are not in the best of shape,' JT joked. 'It will be an early night for a few of them tonight!
‘Some of the boys like Diego and Eden haven’t been back, which is unbelievable, and they’re recently retired, so they’re still in good shape. Joe Cole’s back playing at the Bridge for the first time as well.
‘So I’m just excited to see what these guys have got. They’re going to turn it on for sure, so it’s going to be great for us to be able to sit back and watch them doing the business.’
