Chelsea Under-19s marked our return to the UEFA Youth League in style, as three different scorers helped us fight back and claim a 3-2 away win over Bayern Munich.
Genesis Antwi set the tone early on for the Blues, netting his first goal of the 2025/26 campaign with a clinical finish. However, Bayern fought back before the break and Felipe Chavez struck twice to send the hosts in ahead at the interval.
Chelsea showed resilience and determination in the second period – and that was rewarded with two goals. Captain Shumaira Mheuka netted just after the restart, sliding home his sixth goal of the season across all competitions to make it 2-2.
The winner then came from Harrison Murray-Campbell, who fired a stunning strike into the top corner to secure a memorable victory for the Blues and ensure we start our latest European campaign with a victory.
Quick start
The clash in Munich began at a high tempo, and the Blues immediately asserted ourselves. Landon Emenalo, deployed at left-back, combined effectively with winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, whose bursts down the flank regularly tested the home side's defence.
It was from the opposite flank that our opener arrived, though. Leo Cardoso drove forward from midfield before spotting the overlapping run of right-back Antwi. He timed his burst into the penalty area perfectly and finished decisively with a low strike past Leonard Prescott to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
Bayern sought an immediate response and came close through Adin Licina, whose fierce shot towards the top corner was brilliantly tipped over by Freddy Bernal, preserving our advantage.
Hosts hit back
Bayern did force a quick equaliser, however, as Chavez capitalised on a corner that dipped at the post and crossed the line.
The Blues looked to regain the lead quickly, and Harrison McMahon drove forward with intent before testing the keeper from outside the area; his strike skimmed just wide of the post.
Unfortunately, the hosts then struck again, as Chavez found the bottom corner from distance with an excellent finish to put Bayern ahead.
The game opened up as the opening 45 minutes progressed, and the Blues fashioned further chances. Reggie Walsh combined cleverly with Kavuma-McQueen down the flank, and the winger broke into the box and forced Prescott into a sharp save from close range.
While Cardoso continued to look dangerous, carrying the ball at pace and asking questions of Bayern’s backline, the hosts threatened again through Guido Della Rovere, whose shot struck the side netting.
We went into the interval trailing by a single goal, but there was still plenty to play for.
Flying second-start
We needed just two minutes after the restart to level, and it was our captain who supplied the decisive touch.
Kavuma-McQueen delivered a teasing cross into the box, and Mheuka timed his slide perfectly to force the ball over the line and make it 2-2.
Our momentum continued to grow, and Kavuma-McQueen remained central to our attacking play, this time delivering a precise free-kick that found the towering Olutayo Subuloye. The defender rose highest and met the ball with a strong header, but Prescott reacted sharply to gather it.
Sweet strike
The pressure finally paid off as the young Blues regained the lead with a moment of brilliance.
McMahon’s free-kick caused chaos in the box, and the ball fell perfectly for Murray-Campbell. He struck with precision and power from 15 yards, and the ball flew across goal and into the top corner. We had the lead once more.
The Blues thought we had secured a fourth goal when an Ollie Harrison corner found Murray-Campbell, whose header was finished from close range by Mheuka. However, the referee ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.
The final stages were tense, but we continued to press forward. Head coach Calum McFarlane turned to his bench, introducing Sol Gordon, who made an immediate impact by driving into space and lifting a shot narrowly over the bar.
We held firm as Bayern pushed for a late equaliser, with the backline remaining organised and Bernal commanding his area with authority. Every player battled until the final whistle.
At full-time, the Blues celebrated a hard-fought victory and will take all three points back to Cobham.
