Despite Mathis Eboue giving Chelsea the lead in the second half of a tightly contested London derby, a late equaliser from Tottenham Hotspur meant the points were shared at Hotspur Way on Tuesday evening.
The Under-18s’ first league fixture of the week started at a rapid pace, with both sides probing and creating early chances. Despite flashes of danger, neither could find a breakthrough and the game was goalless at the interval.
We finally broke the deadlock in the 77th minute: Eboue finished with composure to net his fifth goal of the season and give the Blues a hard-earned lead.
However, Spurs, currently leaders of the Under-18 Premier League South, hit back late in the contest. With just five minutes of normal time remaining, Oliver Boast seized on a close-range opportunity to restore parity and deny the Blues victory.
Intense start
With both sides fully aware of the stakes – it was first against second – the game started at a quick pace.
Spurs created the first real chance when Harry Byrne fizzed a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box. Chelsea goalkeeper Freddy Bernal had to react brilliantly, stretching to push Reiss Elliot-Parris’ close-range effort onto the post and away.
The Blues gradually found our rhythm, with winger Kobe Barbour a constant threat down the flank. His pace and close control carried him past defenders before he unleashed a fierce strike, only for the Spurs backline to block the effort.
Bernal was called into action again moments later, diving sharply to smother a skidding effort from Boast as the match remained finely balanced approaching the 20-minute mark.
Our best spell of play in the first half followed shortly after. Landon Emenalo curled a perfectly weighted cross toward the far post and Chizaram Ezenwata kept the move alive. The ball fell to Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who unleashed a thunderous volley that went just inches over the crossbar. The sweeping team move deserved a goal.
Momentum continue to build and just past the half-hour mark, it looked as though the breakthrough had finally arrived.
Lewi Richards delivered a cross from the right that was met cleanly by Nicoll-Jazuli, but a desperate block denied him. Eboue pounced on the loose ball in the crowded box, but Spurs keeper Dylan Thompson was equal to it, producing a crucial save in the scramble.
We pressed on. Shortly before the interval, Richards again caused chaos with a driven pull-back that found Barbour. His powerful strike seemed destined for the net, yet a deflection robbed it of its venom. The rebound dropped kindly for Eboue, whose follow-up was kept out by Thompson.
Despite relentless pressure and a series of close calls, neither side could find a decisive touch before the break.
Battle resumes
Both sides returned to the pitch with the same intensity, but the second half turned into a tight, cagey contest and clear-cut chances were hard to come by.
Chelsea went close from a set-piece. Richards curled in a teasing corner and towering defender Olutayo Subuloye rose highest to meet it with a thumping header. The ball flashed just wide of his near post.
The Blues had another opportunity soon after – this one from a spectacular move. Emenalo lifted a precise ball into the box and Ezenwata timed his bicycle kick perfectly. The effort flew just wide after taking a deflection off a Spurs defender, denying what would have been a sensational goal.
Bernal was then called into action for the first time in the second half when substitute Armend Muslika curled a dangerous left-footed strike from distance. The keeper reacted brilliantly to keep the score level as the match approached the 70-minute mark, the derby still finely poised.
Breaking the deadlock
We remained composed and continued to threaten. Calvin Diakite whipped in a high cross and Ezenwata rose powerfully to meet it. His header drifted just wide, which kept Spurs level. Yet it felt only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken, and the breakthrough came in style.
The move began with substitute Sol Gordon, who used his pace and trickery down the flank to drive forward. He delivered a perfectly measured cross across the area and Eboue was on hand to sweep a low finish past the Spurs keeper, giving the Blues a well-deserved 1-0 lead.
We almost doubled our advantage moments later. Midfielder Reggie Walsh threaded a precise through ball to Ezenwata, who found himself one-on-one with the keeper. His low strike cannoned off the post as the match entered its final 10 minutes.
Spurs hit back
Despite dominating much of the second half, we were hit by a late leveller. With just five minutes remaining, Adewole worked brilliantly on the far side and cut the ball back into a dangerous area. Boast pounced, beating defender Dante Waite’s attempted block and sliding the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
With five minutes of added time, Chelsea threw everything forward in search of a stoppage-time winner. We pressed relentlessly, but Spurs held firm and the final whistle blew.
In the end, we had to settle for a hard-earned point at Hotspur Way after a fiercely contested London derby.
