Xabi Alonso confirmed at his pre-match press conference that both Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra will miss Thursday’s Carabao Cup clash with Luton Town.
The duo were both absent against Fulham on opening day, a game that the Blues won 3-2, and Alonso has announced that they will again sit out on Thursday - but Caicedo could return for the weekend visit of his former side Brighton.
Elsewhere, the Spaniard stated that goalkeeper Mike Penders has an opportunity to feature, while he also expects Enzo Fernandez to be in the squad.
‘Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],’ Alonso said of Caicedo and Palestra. ‘Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco.
‘Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine.
‘Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity. We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first.
‘Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved. He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved.’
